Bring Kashmir detainees to Kashmir: Sayeed tells Indian PM
Srinagar, Monday, March 03, 2008:
Former chief minister of Indian administered Kashmir Mufti Muhammad Sayeed Monday asked Indian Prime Minister to shift the Kashmiri political prisoners to Kashmir from different Indian states.
The pro-Indian politician Mufti is the patron (head) of Kashmir’s ruling ally People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Mufti who had a 45-minute meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday at New Delhi Monday, asked Singh to take measures for shifting back to Kashmir all the Kashmiri political detainees lodged in various Indian jails , a party statement said.
According to human rights groups around 1500 Kashmiri political detainees are lodged in various Indian jails besides those held in jails and detention centres in Kashmir.
Sayeed also expressed dismay over the recurrent incidents of harassment and arrest of Kashmiri students in different Indian states and metropolis.
He sought Singh’s intervention for putting in place a mechanism so that no Kashmiri student or businessman is put to any unnecessary trouble for security reasons.
"In most cases such victims later turnout to be innocents," Mufti said. "Action must be taken against police and troops in these states for falsely implicating and ruining the careers of these Kashmiri students who have left their homes in pursuit of their studies."
"To seek promotions and awards, the police and troops should not be allowed to ruin the careers of the innocent students in these states," he said.
